She especially likes to take pokes at Baptists, Methodists, Pentecostals, Catholics and the Church of Christ.
"A Methodist is a Baptist who will wave at you in a liquor store," Chapman said Sunday afternoon as she walked the stage in the fellowship hall at Columbiana United Methodist Church.
"Baptists need more regulations like Dolly Parton needs more implants," Chapman quipped later.
She had a group of about 100 women laughing out loud for nearly an hour in an appearance sponsored by the Shelby County Arts Council.
Chapman said she grew up Southern Baptist and attended Lakeside Baptist Church for 17 years, but then upset her mother by switching to Metropolitan Church of God, which is Pentecostal.
"I'm a Baptecostal," Chapman said.
"Mother was very upset we're going to a Pentecostal church. She said, 'So, are you into handling snakes?' I work with the Alabama Senate. What's a snake to me?'"
Chapman's show was peppered with digs at both church and politics. The word politics, she said, consists of two root words: "poly," which means "many," and "ticks," which are "blood suckers."
Politicians sometimes expect to be treated like the pope, Chapman noted. "I don't mind kissing rings, if they would just take their hands out of their back pockets," she said.
"Any Church of Christ people here?" Chapman asked. No hands were raised. "Good. Let's make fun of them," she said.
